February 10/11/12 2008 The LONG Flight Sequence or keep heading West until you end up in the East !
A longtime dream to make it to Angkor Wat, I finally decided to actually DO it . In case you haven't noticed NONE of us are getting any younger and I wanted to be able to actullay climb the temples..so off I go. I started on Feb 10th with a short flight to NYC. Thanks to the strong Canadian dollar, flights to Bangkok out of the US are a very good deal. I spent the night in Manhattan, then off on the 1th to Tokyo. The flight was fine but I have to admit that 17 hours is an inhuman length of time to spend in a seat. Boarding the 747 you walk through the first class sections...oh the torture!! I spent 3 hours in Narita airport Tokyo..a GREAT airport...met many fellow Canadians some headed home some arriving in Asia. Onward via a short 7.5 hours flight to Bangkok. I arrive at Suvharnabhumi airport at midnight local time. ONe thing that is relatively easy about being exactly half way around the World is that it is EXACTLY a 12 hour time change...so 10 am in Bangkok is 10 pm the day before at home...etc. I manage to get a meter taxi to the city and to my hostel where I have booked a room for 3 nights. Off to finally sleep in a bed!!
NOTE Throughout my trip I used www.hostelbookers.com for accomodation. This is a great online tool, no fees...relatively good selection of accomodations, highly ressomend it! I booked in to Asha Guesthouse, a tad out of the center, but very close to the skytrain. All in al a nice spot. Good food, free internet, small pool, safe and clean. My only comment would be that the beds are possibly the HARDEST I have ever slept on!! For those of you who have never thought of hostels..let me say they are everything from the most basic dorm to quite comfortable small hotels..give it a try. I would also like to note that finding cheap airfare is a chore..but worth it. I used www.cheapflights.com and found a round trip NYC to Bangkok flight for about $900 taxes in. The closest I could find from Canada was about $1,500. Took me a while searching, but again ..worth it!
