Day Four, Feb. 7th, 2004
San Pedro, San Marcos
I decided to explore the lake today, so headed down to grab one of the small boats (Launchas) that link all the towns around the lake. I got on a slow boat which stopped at San Marcos, , Santa Cruz, San Pablo and San Juan before arriving at San Pedro.
Upon arriving in San Pedro, I immediately ran into the Scottish family from my shuttle from Antigua. I had a coffee with the Mom and Dad, then wandered the town. San Pedoro is very small, but interesting, there's even a small market and a small coffee roasting operation. There also seems to be quite a large expat community. One german (I think) fellow was absolutely blasted ( hallucinogenics no doubt) and proceeded to squeeze a lime into his eye!! Ouch. I was certainly glad when he wandered off somewhere, hopefully to sleep off whatever he had ingested!
Unfortunately I managed to lose the disk sontaining my photos from San Pedro, and have but one which I e-mailed home. This is a photo of the women washing clothes on the shore.
After a great fruit plate at Nick's Cafe, I headed to the launch to return to Panajachel. The Roughguides explain that there is a "direct launch across the lake, a white-knuckle twenty-minute ride"...well i ended up on this one!
The boat actually "took-off" into the air many times and the waves were crashing into the boat. I checked the face of the operator, and he seemed unconcerned..so I guess this butt numbing ride was normal. my butt hurt for days. I did manage to salvage one photo, of Heather from Seattle, "enjoying " the ride.
Tomorow off to Chichicastenango.....
