Day 1, Wednesday February 4th, 2004
I was up with the birds (roosters that is!) and headed out to explore. Right next door to the Posada Merced is a delightful little coffee spot, Fernando's Kaffe. Had an excellent cappuccino and "typico" breakfast (eggs, fried plantian , black beans and toast).
I headed out to find the Rainbow Reading Room, Ave 6 Sur, to search for a new book, as I had finished mine enroute. The Reading Room is a great spot, internet access, cheap (2Q per minute) calls to home, newspapers, excellent food and a good selection of used books...I am going to like this place!
I spent the day wandering around town. Antigua is an easy place to explore, Avenues run North/South , Calles East/West and all are numbered. There is a distinct lack of street signs, but if you orient yourself to the central park (Plaza Mayor)and the volcano (to the South-note it above the archway above) you'll never get lost.
Antigua is a colonial town, there's a unique archway on Avenue 6, and the Cathedral at the Plaza Mayor is really quite nice. The Plaza Mayor is a great place for people watching.
