The flight down was fairly uneventful, a stop in Detroit to change planes then onward to mexcico City. The landing was great, the airport is right in the city, which is surrounded by mountains. I was not able to get a photo, but have borrowed this one off the web.
I managed to find the pre-pais taxi booth (just to the left as you exit the arrivals ) and got a taxi to Hotel Juarez a small, cheap hotel located in the historic zone just off the Zocalo. If you have trouble finding it, it is on a small pedestrian street/slley just off the Cinci de Mayo across the road from the Hotel Canada. I got a double room with complete bath for only 150 pesos. Great start.
I headed out to look around the Zocalo, a huge square . One complete side is taken up by the Cathedral and the remaining three by historic buildings, very reminiscent of Plaza Major in Madrid-only bigger!
I stopped in the Hostal Cathedral to check internet and grab a coffee. this hostal is ideally located right off the Zocalo by the Cathedral.
Later I grabbed a cheap (35 peso) comida corrida at Cafe Popular on Cinco de Mayo- not haute cuisene but loads of food and great price!
