Heading into the medina we are harassed, but not nearly as badly as I had thought. I actually would have been fine alone, but it is nice to have someone to chat with.
I manage to find the Pension Palace, although a palace it aint-but it'll do. I don't haggle nearly enough for a room, but I am just weary and want to get everything seen today, and head onward tomorrow. We manage to convince the hotel guy that it is actually just me astaying here, and that Joachin is just leaving his pack for a few hours. I'm sure he thought otherwise.
We grab a bite to eat, couscous and tajine, and then head out to explore. Of course we are followed by a "guide" who insists he is only wanting to be our friend, we cave and hire him for 20 dh for 2 hours. The medina is nice, and we get sucked into a spice shop, where we are told of the aphrodisiac qualities of certain herbs-this is a bit embarrassing, but we manage to laugh and shrug it off. The next trick of our guide is to try to take us to a carpet shop-we stand firm. I have been to many carpet shops in India and Morocco-and I DO NOT NEED TO SEE ANOTHER !
Our guide is at a loss of where to take us next, so we suggest a hash den. Why the heck not. We spend an enjoyable hour or so watching elderly men play backgammon while smoking water pipes and long wooden pipes?we do not indulge.
Back at the Petit Socco (sans guide), we stop for tea and strike up a conversation with a very drunken man, and his hash-peddling friends. Suddenly police vans arrive and start clearing the square, now I am quite glad to not be alone! With much confusion we find out that they are filming a movie! So if you ever see a movie about Morocco and see a Canadian woman and a Mexican man sipping mint tea-that's us!
Joachin heads to the train after we exchange e-mail addresses, and I decide to have a long hot shower. Well one of the main ingredients of a shower is water-and I have none. I head to the desk and inform them, and head out for toilet paper and bottled water, assuming they'll fix it. The water (bottle) has a broken seal, and I insist on a replacement, wearily I head back.
I end up having to change rooms to get water, and after a nice shower (even hot!) I tumble into bed, let's see what tomorrow brings!
